In short: report it to the police as soon as possible with the scooter’s serial number and registration number (the one starting with M). Tell your insurer only if your policy covers theft: compulsory insurance doesn’t. If only the plate was taken, we send you another one.

1. Report it to the police as soon as possible

Go to the Policía Nacional, the Guardia Civil or your region’s police. Take everything that helps identify the scooter:

  • The serial number (on the manufacturer’s plate; a photo is even better).
  • The DGT registration number, in the format M 0000 AAA. It is on the registration certificate and on the plate.
  • Brand, model and colour, the invoice if you have it and photos of the scooter.
  • Where and when it was stolen.

Ask for a copy of the report and keep it with the registration certificate. If you’ve lost the certificate, you can download it from miDGT: see how to know if my scooter is registered.

2. Tell your insurer, if it covers theft

Compulsory scooter insurance is third-party liability: it pays for damage you cause to others, not for the theft of your scooter. Theft is only covered if your policy includes it. Check your policy and, if it’s covered, notify your insurer with the police report.

3. What happens to the registration?

The police report doesn’t change anything in the Vehicle Register: the scooter stays registered in your name. That’s why you should keep the report: it’s your proof that you no longer have it. If it turns up, the serial and registration numbers prove it’s yours.

4. If only the plate was stolen

You don’t need to register the scooter again: a new plate with the same number is enough. We send it for €15 + €4.95 shipping, with the registration certificate and your DNI or NIE.

Bought a new one?

A new scooter has to be registered from scratch, even if the stolen one was registered. We do it for €35 including the fee and VAT, in under 24 hours, or with the plate for €45 + €4.95 shipping.

How can you tell if a second-hand scooter is stolen?

There’s no foolproof way, but these signs help:

  • Ask for the registration certificate in the seller’s name and check the serial number matches the one on the scooter’s plate.
  • Be wary if there’s no certificate, if the manufacturer’s plate is scratched or torn off, or if the price is too low.
  • Change the owner when you buy it, so it’s in your name. We explain how in second-hand scooter: change of owner.
