What is the scooter's identification label?
It is a reflective sticker with your scooter's registration number: the number is in black on a white background and, underneath, in a blue strip, the certification number, with security marks. You must carry it (Royal Decree 52/2026).
The registration number has the format M 0000 AAA, with no vowels, Ñ or Q: it runs from M 0001 BBB to M 9999 ZZZ. The label is not a metal plate and doesn't carry the EU flag; the metal plate you see on the scooter is the manufacturer's black plate, which is something else.

Where can you get the scooter label?
Option 1: order the identification plate from NT Cars
We send the identification plate (placa identificativa: the identification label the DGT requires, which many people call the scooter's number plate or sticker) to your home for €15 + €4.95 shipping (VAT included). We print it ourselves: NT Cars is an authorised number-plate processor (manipulador de placas habilitado) registered in Spain's National Vehicle Register (no. 038001272), so it meets the rules. This is how to order it:
- Have the DGT registration PDF to hand.
- Fill in the identification plate form, upload the PDF and pay €15 + €4.95 shipping.
- It arrives at your home in 3-7 working days.
- Stick it in the right place: in the rear label holder (porta-identificador) if your scooter is certified, or somewhere visible if it isn't.
If you haven't registered the scooter yet, the registration + plate pack costs €45 + €4.95 shipping, €5 less than ordering the two separately. If you have a Spanish driving licence, you don't need Cl@ve or a digital certificate: we identify you with your licence and handle the whole procedure for you (without a Spanish licence, you identify yourself with Cl@ve PIN or a digital certificate).
Option 2: another authorised number-plate processor
The label can only be made by authorised number-plate processors, registered in the National Vehicle Register by the DGT. You will need your registration certificate. The OCU (18/09/2026) puts it at about €20. A workshop can only make it if it is an authorised number-plate processor, and the DGT doesn't send it.
What about the stickers sold online?
Online shops sell stickers for €9.95 to €24.99. Before you buy one, bear in mind that only labels made by authorised number-plate processors are valid and that it is prohibited to put on labels that don't meet the rules. Printing one at home isn't valid either.
How much does the label cost?
| Option | Price | Delivery time | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| NT Cars identification plate | €15 + €4.95 shipping | 3-7 working days | The DGT registration PDF |
| Registration + plate pack (NT Cars) | €45 + €4.95 shipping (you save €5) | Certificate in under 24 hours; then the plate in 3-7 working days | The registration documents |

| Generic stickers from online shops | €9.95 to €24.99 | — | Only valid if made by an authorised number-plate processor |
The label is paid for separately from the DGT registration fee (€8.67). All the costs of registering a scooter are in how much it costs to register a scooter, and our prices on the prices page.
What do you need to order it?
Your scooter's registration number, which appears on the registration certificate PDF issued by the DGT. Without registration there is no number, and without a number the label can't be made.
Not registered yet? You can do it yourself on the DGT's online office, paying the €8.67 fee, or with us for €35 all inclusive. We explain it in how to register your scooter with the DGT.
Where does the label go?
- Certified scooters: in the rear label holder, under the light, tilted at 30° and at least 50 mm off the ground (the minimum space is 52.8 × 65 mm).
- Non-certified scooters: somewhere visible.
Never on the stem, the mudguard or the deck if your scooter has a label holder. All the details in the scooter label: what it looks like and where it goes.
Is it compulsory? Is there a fine if you don't carry it?
Yes, you must carry it, although there is no official figure for the fine for not carrying it. It's the same with registration: Royal Decree 52/2026 does not in itself set a fine for not registering a scooter. But without registration and a label, the scooter cannot be ridden legally or insured, and the DGT fines riding without insurance at €250 to €800 (€202 to €610 for not having a policy in place). The scooter can also be immobilised. More in e-scooter fines.
The label also matters if you want to travel by train with your scooter: since 7 September 2026, Renfe (Spain's national rail operator) only lets it on commuter (Cercanías), regional (Media Distancia) and long-distance (Larga Distancia) trains if it is certified, registered, with the label visible and insured, and always folded and switched off (not on Rodalies or Cercanías Euskadi).
What if you lose it or it gets damaged?
Your registration number doesn't change: you just need a new label with the same number. You can order the identification plate again with your registration PDF. If it peels off or becomes hard to read, replace it: it has to be visible.
What if you buy a second-hand scooter that already has a label?
The registration number doesn't change when the owner changes, so the label is still valid. What you do need is the change of owner with the DGT: within 30 days, the buyer starts it, the seller authorises it within 72 hours and the fee is €8.67. We explain it in changing the owner of a second-hand scooter.
What if your scooter isn't certified?
It also needs registration and a label, which in its case goes somewhere visible. But it can only be ridden until 22 January 2027; after that it can't be ridden even with a label. Your options in what to do with a non-certified scooter.
