Your scooter is registered if it has a DGT registration certificate: a PDF with your name as the registered owner and a registration number in the format M 0000 AAA. To check, look for that PDF or log in to miDGT, the DGT's private area: according to the DGT, you can see the scooters registered in your name there and download their certificates. If it isn't listed, it isn't registered in your name.

How do I know if my scooter is registered with the DGT?

Look for the registration certificate or log in to miDGT. If the scooter is registered in your name, that certificate must exist and the scooter must appear in miDGT.

  1. Look for the PDF. If you registered it yourself online, the DGT's online office (sede electrónica) lets you download it when you finish, and it also sends the registration and fee payment details to the email address you gave. If we registered it for you, we send you the certificate as a PDF by email.
  2. Log in to miDGT. It's the private area of the DGT's online office and also a mobile app. The DGT says you can see the scooters (VMPs, personal mobility vehicles) registered in your name there and download their registration certificates. To log in you can use Cl@ve, a digital certificate, your personal details with a code sent to you by SMS or, on an Android phone with NFC, your electronic DNI.
  3. Look at the label, but don't stop there. The identification label shows the registration number, but it's the certificate that proves the registration and who the owner is: the DGT says it serves to prove ownership before any public authority.

If you don't have a certificate and the scooter doesn't appear in miDGT, it isn't registered in your name: either it was never registered or it's still in someone else's name, such as the previous owner.

What is the registration certificate and what does it show?

It's the document that proves your scooter is on the DGT's Vehicle Register. It's always digital, as a PDF, and under Royal Decree 52/2026 it includes the scooter's technical details, the owner's details and the identification number assigned to it.

FieldWhat it means
Número de inscripciónYour scooter's registration number, in the format M 0000 AAA: an M, 4 digits and 3 letters, with no vowels, Ñ or Q. It's the number on the identification label
Número de CertificaciónThe model's certificate number: the laboratory's letter and 4 digits (B1108 in the example)
Número de serieYour scooter's unique serial number. It must match the one on the manufacturer's black plate

Nombre comercial and ModeloThe name it's sold under (Segway eKickScooter Ninebot E3) and the model, which may be a technical code (051901E)
Fecha de inscripción and de expediciónWhen the scooter was registered and when the document was issued
Datos técnicosDimensions, weights, maximum speed (25 km/h in the example), rated power and number of seats

What each number is and where to find it on the scooter: your scooter's certificate number: what it is and where to find it.

Registered, certified and «matriculado»: what's the difference?

«Certified» (or «homologado», approved) refers to the model; «registered» (inscrito) refers to your scooter on the DGT's Vehicle Register. «Matricular» is what many people call it in Spanish, but the procedure is called registration (inscripción).

WordWhat it refers toHow you check it
Certified («homologado»)The model: it passed the tests of an authorised laboratoryManufacturer's black plate and the DGT's list
Registered («matriculado»)Your scooter: it's on the DGT's Vehicle Register in its owner's nameRegistration certificate PDF or miDGT
LabelledIt has its registration number stuck on itLooking at the scooter: the number must match the certificate

A certified scooter may not be registered, and a registered one may not be certified: non-certified scooters sold before 22 January 2024 are registered as a «vehículo no certificado» (non-certified vehicle) and can only be ridden until 22 January 2027. If what you want to know is whether your model is certified, see how to know if your scooter is approved or look it up in our certified e-scooter finder.

How do I download the certificate if I've lost it?

Log in to miDGT and download it again: the DGT says you can download the registration certificates of the scooters registered in your name there. First, check your email: the DGT sends the registration details to the address you gave and, if we registered it for you, we send you the PDF by email.

Save it on your phone and somewhere else safe. You'll need it to:

  • Order the identification plate (placa identificativa: the identification label the DGT requires, which many people call the scooter's number plate or sticker). From us it costs €15 + €4.95 shipping (VAT included) and you need the registration PDF and your DNI or NIE.
  • Take out insurance, which is done with your registration number.
  • Sell the scooter: the seller hands over the certificate together with the scooter.
  • Report a theft: with the serial number and the M number you can identify the scooter.

What if I'm buying a second-hand scooter?

Ask the seller for the registration certificate and compare it with the scooter: the owner must be the person selling it to you, the M number must match the label and the serial number must match the manufacturer's plate. If they don't have it or the numbers don't match, be wary.

If it's already registered, it isn't registered again: a change of owner is done with the DGT. The buyer starts it within 30 days, the seller authorises it within 72 hours and the fee is €8.67. The registration number doesn't change; the DGT issues a new certificate in the buyer's name. We don't handle changes of owner: we explain how to do it yourself in second-hand scooters: change of owner.

If the scooter was never registered, there's no change of owner to do: you register it directly in your name.

What if it isn't registered?

Register it before you ride it. Registration in the DGT's Vehicle Register has been compulsory since 30 January 2026 (Royal Decree 52/2026), and to be ridden the scooter must be registered, carry the identification label and have third-party liability insurance (Law 5/2025).

You can do it yourself on the DGT's online office, with Cl@ve, an electronic DNI or a digital certificate, paying only the €8.67 fee. You'll need the certificate number and the serial number: we explain where they are in your scooter's certificate number. Or we can do it for you: with a Spanish driving licence you don't need Cl@ve or a digital certificate. If you also want the plate, the registration + plate pack costs €45 + €4.95 shipping (VAT included). First, check what documents you need.

Frequently asked questions

Does the label prove the scooter is registered?

Not on its own. The label shows the registration number, but it's the registration certificate that proves the registration and who the owner is. Check that the number on the label is the same as on the certificate.

What format does a scooter's registration number have?

An M, 4 digits and 3 letters, with no vowels, Ñ or Q: from M 0001 BBB to M 9999 ZZZ. It's the number on the label and it doesn't change when the scooter changes hands.

Can I download the registration certificate in miDGT?

Yes. The DGT says that in miDGT you can see the scooters registered in your name and download their registration certificates. To log in you can use Cl@ve, a digital certificate, your personal details with a code sent by SMS or, on an Android phone with NFC, your electronic DNI.

Can I ride with just the registration certificate?

No. As well as being registered, the scooter must carry the identification label and have third-party liability insurance. The PDF doesn't replace the label.

How long do you take to get me the registration certificate?

Normally under 24 working hours once your documents are complete. We send you the certificate as a PDF by email.
