What is a scooter's certificate number?
It's the code a scooter model receives when it passes the tests of an authorised laboratory. It's the same for every scooter of that model and version, because certification applies to the model, not to each unit: it's normally requested by the manufacturer.
Spanish rules call an electric scooter a «vehículo de movilidad personal» (personal mobility vehicle, or VMP). The VMP Characteristics Manual, published in the BOE (the Spanish state gazette), sets the number's format: the letter that identifies the laboratory and 4 sequential digits, such as B1134. If the certificate covers a single scooter (an extraordinary certification requested by the owner), it has the laboratory's letter, a U and 4 digits.
On the DGT list reproduced in our certified e-scooter finder (393 models, updated by the DGT on 22/09/2026), every number starts with A, B or C. The B1134 used in the examples belongs to the Xiaomi Electric Scooter 6 Lite GL.
Is it the same as the serial number or the registration number?
No. They're three different numbers: the certificate number identifies the model, the serial number identifies your scooter and the registration number is given by the DGT when you register it. All three can appear on your scooter's paperwork, so it's worth keeping them apart.
| Number | What it identifies | Who gives it | Format | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate number | The certified model and version | An authorised laboratory | Lab letter and 4 digits (B1134) | Manufacturer's black plate, technical data sheet and registration certificate |
| Serial number | Your scooter, a single unit | The manufacturer | Whatever each manufacturer uses | Manufacturer's black plate («Serie» field), technical data sheet or invoice |
| Registration number | Your scooter in the DGT's Vehicle Register | The DGT, when you register it | M, 4 digits and 3 letters (M 0000 AAA) | Registration certificate PDF and identification label |
What many people call the scooter's «number plate» (matrícula) is the registration number. The identification label carries both: the registration number in large print and, below it, on a blue strip, the certification number (Royal Decree 52/2026, Annex XX).
Where is the certificate number?
On the manufacturer's black metal plate, in the «Nº certificado» field. It's usually at the base of the stem, under the deck where you put your feet or near the rear wheel. It's a fixed plate, not a sticker, and it's what many people look for as the «homologation plate».
According to the VMP Characteristics Manual, this plate (the factory marking) must show the make and model, the serial number, the certificate number, the year of manufacture and the maximum speed. You'll see two similar fields on it: «Serie» (serial number) and «Nº certificado». The one the DGT asks for as the certificate number is the second.

If you can't find the plate or it can't be read, look on the technical data sheet (ficha técnica: the document with the scooter's technical details). If the scooter is certified, the data sheet should show it, because it's what the DGT asks for to register the scooter, together with a photo of the plate. It may also be in the manual or on the invoice.
What if the scooter is already registered?
Then you'll also find it on the DGT registration certificate PDF: it appears as «Número de Certificación» (certification number), next to the serial number. On that certificate, «Nombre comercial» is the name the scooter is sold under and «Modelo» (model) may be a technical code, such as 051901E in this Segway example.

How to read the rest of the certificate is explained in how to check if your scooter is registered with the DGT.
How do I check my number is correct?
Look it up on the list of certified models published by the DGT or in our finder, which reproduces that list: if it appears with your make and model, it's correct. The DGT's online office itself says that if you don't have the number but know the make and model, you can look it up on that list.
- Search by the number on your plate and check that the make and model shown are yours.
- Check the version (Pro, Lite, Max…): two versions from the same brand may have different numbers.
- Some brands are listed under a technical code instead of the commercial name, such as Segway-Ninebot (for example, 051201E) or some Xiaomi models (DDHBC09LQ). That code is on the same plate or the technical data sheet.
- Some models have more than one number: on the list, 13 of the 393. Check that one of them is the one on your plate.
What if the online office says «certificado no encontrado»?
It's almost always a wrongly copied number. Check it character by character, watching out for the letter O and zero, and check the model's version. If it still isn't on the list, it may be a recent certificate or the scooter may not be certified. It's explained step by step in what to do if the online office says «certificado no encontrado» (certificate not found).
What if my scooter has no certificate number?
Then it isn't certified: the DGT says non-certified scooters don't have a certificate number. If it was sold before 22 January 2024, you can register it as a «vehículo no certificado» (non-certified vehicle), with its make, model and serial number, and it can be ridden until 22 January 2027. After that, it can't.
If it was sold after that date and isn't certified, it can't be registered as non-certified: talk to the seller, because since 22 January 2024 the models on sale must be certified. You can also ask an authorised laboratory for an extraordinary certification of your scooter, with a result that may be positive or negative. Your options are in what to do with a non-certified scooter.
Where is the serial number?
On certified scooters, on the same black plate, in the «Serie» field. It's unique to each scooter and you always need it to register the scooter, certified or not. If there's no plate, look for it on a label on the scooter, on the technical data sheet or on the invoice: on a Xiaomi M365, for example, it's on a label under the deck.

Copy it character by character: the serial number you enter when registering is the one that will appear on your registration certificate.
Got the number? Here's what comes next
With the certificate number and the serial number you can register the scooter. If you do it yourself on the DGT's online office (sede electrónica), you need Cl@ve, an electronic DNI or a digital certificate and pay the €8.67 fee: it's explained in how to register your scooter with the DGT. If you'd rather we did it, check what documents you need: with a Spanish driving licence you don't need Cl@ve or a digital certificate.
When you finish, you'll have a registration certificate with your M 0000 AAA number. With it you can order the identification plate (placa identificativa: the identification label the DGT requires, which many people call the scooter's number plate or sticker): from us, €15 + €4.95 shipping (VAT included), or from another authorised number-plate processor.
