Why is this Black Friday different?
Because the rules for scooters changed in 2026. Today, to ride on the street, your scooter needs to:
- Be registered with the DGT (Royal Decree 52/2026). This is what everyone calls “matricular”.
- Carry the plate: a sticker with its number, at the back under the light.
- Be insured, compulsory since 2 January 2026 (Law 5/2025).
- Be ridden with a helmet, compulsory since 1 October 2026. Without one, the fine is €200.
And there is a date that matters a lot: non-certified scooters can no longer be ridden after 22 January 2027. A non-certified “bargain” would only be useful for a few weeks.
What to check before you pay
There are five things. Look at the technical sheet on the shop’s website or ask the seller:
| What to check | What it should say |
|---|---|
| Certificate number | One letter and four digits, for example B1029. It is on the manufacturer’s black plate and on the technical sheet. |
| That it is on the DGT list | Look it up in our certified scooter finder: that brand and that model must appear. |
| Top speed | 25 km/h at most. If it goes faster, it is not a scooter in the eyes of the law and cannot be ridden. |
| Power | Up to 1,000 W. |
| Weight | Under 50 kg. |
If the listing only says “DGT approved”, don’t take it on trust: ask for the certificate number and check it. More in what to check before buying a scooter.
What if you buy online?
Non-certified scooters are still sold online. Since 22 January 2024, scooters on sale must be certified: a non-certified one you buy now cannot be registered, so you won’t be able to ride it on the street.
- Before you pay: ask for the certificate number. If the seller won’t give it to you, don’t buy it.
- If it arrives without a certificate: complain to the shop. For online purchases you normally have 14 days to return it (right of withdrawal).
You’ve got it: what to do next
- Register it with the DGT. With us, €35 including the fee and VAT, in under 24 hours and without going to a traffic office. We only need your DNI (or your NIE with your address in Spain) and a photo of the scooter’s plate showing the serial number. If you don’t have Cl@ve, a digital certificate or a driving licence, we create a 48-hour digital certificate for you for €10 more.
- Fit the plate. We send it to you for €15 + €4.95 shipping, or together with the registration in the pack for €45 + shipping.
- Take out insurance. We don’t sell it: ask our insurance partner for a quote, from €69 a year.
- Wear a helmet. Always.
Do it yourself or let us do it?
| You, on the DGT website | With NT Cars | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | €8.67 fee | €35 including the fee and VAT |
| What you need | Cl@ve or a digital certificate | Your DNI or NIE and a photo of the plate |
| If something goes wrong | You sort it out | We sort it out |
| How long it takes | Depends on the website | Under 24 hours |
Is it a Christmas or Three Kings present?
You can register it before you wrap it: just take it out of the box to photograph the plate with the serial number. If it is for a child, remember you must be 15 to ride a scooter. We explain it in an e-scooter for a child.
