Registering a scooter with the DGT (Spain's traffic authority) costs €8.67 in fees if you do it yourself, or €35 with NT Cars, including the fee and VAT. Adding the label (about €20) and insurance (€35-93 a year, according to the Spanish consumer organisation OCU), both required to ride, the first year comes to about €64-122 if you do it yourself and about €85-143 with NT Cars.

What costs are involved in registering a scooter?

To be ridden, the scooter must be registered with the DGT, carry the identification label and have third-party liability insurance (Law 5/2025). That means three payments:

  • DGT registration: fee 4.1, which is €8.67. You pay it when you register the scooter and again if it changes owner.
  • The identification label: a reflective sticker with your registration number, which you must carry.
  • Third-party liability insurance: paid every year.

And there is nothing like the ITV (Spain's roadworthiness test): neither Royal Decree 52/2026 nor the VMP technical manual requires the owner to take the scooter for any inspection.

What we have assumed:

  • Label from an authorised number-plate processor: about €20, the figure given by the OCU (18/09/2026).
  • Insurance: €35 to €93 a year, the range of policies in the OCU comparison (18/09/2026). It's the same in all three columns because you can take it out with any insurer you like.
  • NT Cars: registration and plate in the €45 + €4.95 shipping pack, which works out €5 cheaper than ordering them separately (€35 + €15 + €4.95).
  • Other gestorías: from about €36 to €100, according to public prices checked on 24/09/2026. We have assumed they include the fee; if not, add €8.67.

All our prices include VAT and are on the prices page. If you are going to use a gestoría, here is how to choose one.

Why is the fee €8.67 and not €27.85?

Because they are different fees. Scooters pay fee 4.1, which is €8.67 and is also the fee for a change of owner. The €27.85 is fee 1.2, the one for mopeds. If you are asked for a different amount as the fee for a scooter, check it before paying.

How much does the identification label cost?

You can order the identification plate (placa identificativa: the identification label the DGT requires, which many people call the scooter's number plate or sticker) from us for €15 + €4.95 shipping: it arrives in 3-7 working days and all we need is the DGT registration PDF. You can also order it from another authorised number-plate processor; the OCU (18/09/2026) puts it at about €20.

How much does the insurance cost?

According to the OCU comparison (18/09/2026), scooter policies cost €35 to €93 a year. We don't sell insurance: you can request a no-obligation quote from our insurance partner, with policies from €69 a year.

The minimum cover is €6,450,000 for personal injury and €1,300,000 for property damage, and the insurance only covers you in Spain. If your scooter weighs more than 25 kg and goes faster than 14 km/h, it counts as a motor vehicle for insurance purposes. Everything about the policy in compulsory scooter insurance.

What if you don't register it?

Royal Decree 52/2026 does not in itself set a fine for not registering a scooter. But without registration and a label, the scooter cannot be ridden legally or insured, and the DGT fines riding without insurance at €250 to €800 (€202 to €610 for not having a policy in place). The scooter can also be immobilised. More in e-scooter fines.
