Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Is it compulsory to register my electric scooter in 2026?

Yes. Since January 2026, all VMPs (personal mobility vehicles) circulating on public roads must be registered in the DGT National Vehicle Registry. Registration is a mandatory prerequisite for taking out the compulsory liability insurance.

How much does it cost to register an electric scooter?

With NT Cars, the full process costs €29.95 all included: management by a registered agent, DGT fees included and official PDF certificate. No hidden costs or surprises.

What is the fine for riding an unregistered scooter?

Riding a VMP not registered with the DGT can result in fines of €200 to €1,000. Additionally, without registration you cannot take out the compulsory insurance, which is another offence with penalties of €250 to €800.

Do I need a digital certificate, Cl@ve or electronic DNI to register my scooter?

No. NT Cars processes directly at the DGT electronic office using our own registered agency credentials (no. 4213). You do not need a digital certificate, Cl@ve PIN, electronic DNI or any other digital identification system. You simply send the documentation and we handle everything.

Can a scooter without a type approval certificate be registered?

Yes. The DGT allows registration of non-certified scooters under a transitional regime. The registration will be valid until 22 January 2027.

How long does the process take?

Once we receive the complete documentation, the official registration certificate arrives by email within 24–48 working hours.

Is insurance compulsory for scooters?

Yes. Since 2026, all VMPs must have a compulsory third-party liability insurance. To take it out, you must first register the scooter with the DGT.

Does it include insurance and the identification label?

We are working on this due to the new regulations. Currently, our service includes the official registration in the DGT Registry and the PDF registration certificate, which allows you to take out insurance and request the label.

What documents do I need?

You need: DNI/NIE of the owner, driving licence, and depending on the scooter type: if certified, the certificate number and serial number; if not certified, a photo of the technical sheet or plate with the serial number. See full details

How do I know if my scooter is DGT certified?

Certified scooters have a black marking plate with the certificate number. You can check whether your model appears on the official DGT list of approved VMPs.

What is the identification label?

It is a sticker with the registration number that acts as the scooter's number plate. It is obtained at authorised plate centres by presenting the registration certificate. It costs between €20 and €30.
